Join Trans Joy is Resistance for “In Lieu of Trans Remembrance Month,” an evening of remembrance for our elders, whose shoulders we proudly stand on, who were lost in the battle, but whose fight for freedom is embodied in our existence and joy.

Trans Joy is Resistance is a collective of Trans, Non-Binary, Queer and allied artists presenting contemporary works in the form of art, fashion, film and music who all met through The Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center (CONOTEC). At the evening’s events, these leaders in the community will showcase their projects and talents as a means of taking space, resistance, and hopes of allyship from supporters like you!

“In Lieu of Trans Remembrance Month” will include:

6:00 PM – Vigil Procession: Leaving Plummer Park, Rooms 5 & 6 to The Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center (one block away) for a private tour of the CONOTEC. Electronic candles will be provided for the procession in memory of our fallen Trans siblings & those lost to AIDS. 

7:00 PM – TRANSformation & IDENTITY Portraits Short Film Screening: This screening, and the rest of the evening’s events, will take place at Plummer Park, Rooms 5 & 6.

8:00 PM – DoYou Workshop Introduction with Yozmit

8:30 PM – ART & FASHION by Mars Wright and Armani Dae

Featured Artists


Mars Wright is a Trans Artist and Activist who spreads Trans Joy by sharing art with the world. Wright is a mixed media artists that is interested in the beauty of imperfection and the strength of radical honesty. “ Through sharing my life vulnerably I hope to help folks feel less alone. We are all trying our best and I want to honor that effort.” 


Armani (Armani Dae), CEO/Creator of ArmaniDae LLC, is a Creator, Actor, Author and “Artivist” (activist through art). Born & raised in Philadelphia, PA (currently bicoastal between Los Angeles & New York City). From photography to pouring positive energy into others, Armani prides himself on creating art and events that spark conversation and speak volume. His work including but not limited to photography, paintings, written materials, and more always shed light and bring awareness to many important life aspects such as Self Love, Equality, Body Positivity, Trans Rights, Wellness, Community, the importance of Art and the expression of life through it.


TRANSFormation TV Series Pilot Participants


Gris Paloma Iris (She/They) is a proud Nonbinary Trans Boricua on occupied Tongva land. Her work can be seen in TRANSformation on YouTube and Instagram, a short film that she wrote, directed and acts in. Paloma currently works as the Media Director at the Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center in West Hollywood, CA and enjoys opportunities to create with and for her intersectional communities.


IDENTITY PORTRAITS – Short Films Participants


Liam Woods is a Trans + Non Binary Image Maker based out of LA. Their work is characterized by the vulnerable, candidly intimate storytelling of Queer people, Black People, People of Color and other marginalized communities. In their 5 year experience as a photographer, Liam has partnered with brands such as Apple, Adidas and Warby Parker. They have also shot for publications includuing People Magazine, Washington Post, Vogue Paris, The New York Times, LA Times, Cosmopolitan, and Playgirl Magazine. With their brand experience, Liam has formed over 50 creative job opportunities (and counting) for BIPOC and Queer People both in front of and behind the camera. The main mission in their work is to continue to build upon community and provide resources/access for the betterment of BIPOC and Queer creatives as a whole.  


Sasha Marie Speer uses a variety of materials and processes to investigate, break apart and reconfigure how we connect to ourselves and each other. Through her provoking and powerful studio sessions in photography, video and audio she harnesses the soul of her subjects and creates experiences from them in her work. She interweaves pain and hope into visual forms and experiences to capture and challenge our current state as human beings and seeks possibility of real connection in a world of constant distraction and separation.


“Yozmit The DogStar” is a Transgender singer-songwriter, performance artist, and costume designer. After immigrating to California, Yozmit went on a spiritual artistic journey to find a voice as a trans artist. The DogStar uses self-awareness and art practice as tools for liberation from inequality, bigotry, and marginalization. Yozmit utilizes voice, dance, and costumery as theatrical/shamanic trinity to tell stories about “Yozmit The DogStar” the goddess archetype using a male form while embodying both The Sacred Feminine and The Sacred Masculine. Yozmit creates songs, looks, costumes, public performances, and workshops and spreads her *DoYou* message to encourage people to become fully self-realized and actualizing self-identity.  


Curator Bio


Steve Galindo at THESTYLEGUYDE is an emerging, multi-media Los Angeles-based activist, artist and curator. Galindo has a background in art and fashion, and graduated from the West Hollywood Artist Bootcamp 2020. In 2022, they received the Transgender Arts Initiative grant from The City of West Hollywood which began their relationship with the newly opened Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center and their relationship with all the artists in this program. 


THESTYLEGUYDE Gallery stands to “Unite Communities through the Language of Art Photography, Mixed Media Manipulation, Painting and Sculpture in hopes of driving conversation of change for marginal communities including the BIPOC and LGBTQAI+ Communities in Los Angeles. Steve’s goal in their curatorial work is to build out conversations of the intersections of our joint struggles to build better more inclusive communities. They have spent the last seven years learning from prominent artists, curators, community organizers and gallerists formulating an artistic philosophy steeped in a desire to express unifying truths about the human experience.


This event is curated by Activist Steve Galindo as part of the 2023 Circa: Queer Histories Festival, presented by One Institute. TRANS JOY IS RESISTANCE is a phrase borrowed and coined by Mars Wright.

  • FLUX - aims to raise the profile of the trans* and non-binary community by leveraging social events, creating safe spaces, and innovative advocacy initiatives.

  • The Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center (CONOTEC) is the first facility of its kind nationwide serving Trans and Non-Binary individuals and communities of, by and for Trans and nonbinary people. Our unique model provides comprehensive resources, training, support, and medical services for transgender people living in Los Angeles. The Connie Norman Empowerment Center is a creation of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) whose mission is to provide cutting-edge medicine and advocacy regardless of ability to pay. The new center will help advance AHF’s mission by providing high-quality HIV care and functioning as a ‘WeWork’ space for Trans-led organizations to do their work, advocate for the community, and be affirmed.

  • Unique Woman’s Coalition (UWC) - is dedicated to being a collective voice centering on the narratives and needs of Black Trans culture. We're committed to fostering the next generation of black trans leadership from within the community through mentorship, scholarship, and community care engagement work.
