This event will be a live reading of ONE, a limited series TV pilot about a ragtag group of queer people who publish a gay magazine in 1950’s Los Angeles and fight to stay open after the Post Office bans their magazine. The only lawyer willing to take their case is a young, straight, Ayn Rand-loving man who is uncomfortable around queer people, but willing to put everything at stake due to his passion for free speech. 

Fans of MAD MEN and THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL will enjoy this fun, campy tale of queer people demanding their voices be heard in the untold story of the first gay rights case to make its way to the Supreme Court. 

After the live read, the programmers will honor Eric Julber, the attorney who won the case. Eric Julber’s widow Inge Kessler will be attending to accept an award on his behalf. 

Participant Bios

Kelly Rouse received a BFA in Motion Picture, Television & Recording Arts from Florida State University. Kelly worked as a Creative Executive at Echo Lake Productions. Her romantic comedy screenplay, “Most Likely Two”, was acquired by Columbia Pictures, earning her membership in the WGAWest. Kelly also co-directed and co-produced the feature documentary, “The Year of Paper”, which examines the same-sex marriage debate. “The Year of Paper” was distributed in the educational market by Frameline. Kelly is a member of the Geena Davis Institute of Gender in Media. She is currently President of Digigal Pictures, based in St. Petersburg, FL. 

W.A.W. Parker is a queer/Two-Spirit/Northern Cheyenne/white/writer in Los Angeles. He studied film and gender at Harvard and loves telling elevated/subversive/queer/period stories: think millennial Merchant-Ivory. Their pilot THE BARON made the GLAAD List and the Indigenous List. Their novel “The Wasteland” about T.S. Eliot won the American Fiction Award and the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award in LGBTQ+ Fiction. This year, their live-action short film THE ROOF will be released on Disney+.
