A People’s Museum of LGBTQ+ History is a socially engaged artwork that brings people together in the creation of a grassroots archive, telling the stories of everyday LGBTQ+ people. Contributions to the project are made through A People’s Museum of LGBTQ+ History public workshops, facilitated by Kate Jarboe and M. Wright, who together make up the art collective AK/OK.

All participants will receive credit as an artist in the project. The resulting collection of drawings and stories will travel internationally to galleries and public spaces, as an homage to the LGBTQ+ people we collectively remember, whose stories have largely been untold. 

All are welcome! Come make queer history!

Participant Bios

Kate Jarboe and M. Wright (Facilitators) work together as the art and design collective AK/OK, based between Tulsa and Montreal. Our work has been exhibited and presented at the Brooklyn Museum, the Maryland Institute College of Art, San Francisco State University, SOMA (Mexico City), Bishopsgate Institute (London), Central Saint Martins (London), and Stockholm University of the Arts. Our artist’s books are distributed by Printed Matter and housed in the collections of the Allen Ginsberg Estate (New York), the Butler Library at Columbia University (New York), the GLBT Historical Society (San Francisco), the National Design Archives (Denver), and the National Museum of American History (Washington, DC).

This program is organized by AK/OK as part of the 2023 Circa: Queer Histories Festival, presented by One Institute. This program is co-presented with the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

  • AK/OK creates situations for public engagement with queer & feminist histories, archives, and contemporary politics. Overlapping the individual art and design practices of Kate Jarboe and M. Wright, we incorporate time-based media, web interventions, printed works, public installations, and artist’s books, in our research-based and socially engaged projects.

  • The Los Angeles LGBT Center is a safe and welcoming place where the LGBTQ+ community finds help, hope, and support when it is needed the most.
